Names and Identity

Three names refer to the same person.

Youssef Akef is the primary professional name. It's how I sign work, how clients refer to me, and how the brand reads across the website, films, and bylines.

Youssef Kamal Akef is the full legal name. It appears on official credits, government ceremony rolls, Guinness World Record certificates, and older platform usernames where the shorter form was already taken. Many cultural and government projects from 2018 onward are credited to Youssef Kamal Akef in public records.

Youssef Kamal is the casual short form, common in conversation and in early career credits. The Arabic equivalent is يوسف كمال.

If you found this page searching for any of these names, you found the right person. Same résumé. Same body of work. One name now leads the others.

Origin and Education

I trained at the EMDI Institute of Media and Communication, the regional event management programme based in Dubai with roots in Mumbai. EMDI graduates run a lot of the live events industry across the GCC. I took the standard path through production roles, then technical direction, then creative direction. The programme builds operators who understand both the creative brief and the logistics that decide whether it actually happens.

I came up through the events industry in the UAE during a period when the country was investing aggressively in cultural infrastructure: museums, festivals, government anniversaries, national days, royal launches. The industry was small enough that a serious operator could get briefs at scale within a few years, and large enough that the briefs were varied. I worked on enough different formats during the early years (corporate galas, retail activations, brand launches, government ceremonies, cultural festivals, sporting opens) that creative direction became less about a single style and more about reading a brief and deciding what the right form is.

The Work

Creative Direction

The core of the job. I direct the idea, the scenography, the content, the show flow, and the stakeholder narrative across event projects. Practical scope: concept and creative platform, storyboard and visual treatment, scenographic design direction, content storyboarding and AV direction, broadcast camera plan when required, show calling, and the relationship with the client and the principal stakeholders.

Most of the projects sit in one of three categories: government ceremonies (high-protocol, low-risk-tolerance, often broadcast), cultural festivals (high creative latitude, public-facing, multi-day), and brand launches (commercial, KPI-driven, integrated with media campaigns).

Film Direction

I direct short films, brand films, commercial content, and AI-directed content. The film work runs in parallel with the events work and feeds back into it. Films get used inside live events as scenographic content, and event-scale narrative thinking carries into how I structure screen-based work.

My debut feature film, Beyond Permitted (Arabic: ابعد الحلال), is in development. It's a psychological portrait of attachment, paralysis, and the quiet violence of staying. Written and directed by me. Bilingual English and Arabic.

AI Content Direction

For the past two years I've been directing AI-generated visual content as a craft discipline in its own right. Not as a novelty or a budget shortcut, but as a directorial medium with its own grammar. This work runs through Lara, the AI design studio I'm building. The output covers brand films, micro-drama series, character-consistent campaign content, and storyboard-to-render pipelines that take a script to finished video without a traditional shoot.

Experiential and Immersive Design

Visitor-flow design for cultural festivals, escape rooms, museums, and immersive activations. This is closely related to event direction but with different physics: the audience is in motion, the journey lasts longer, the story is built into the architecture rather than the stage.
