Youssef Akef, film director based in Dubai

Film Director · Dubai

What Directing Actually Decides

A film is a sequence of decisions and the director owns them. What the film is about underneath the brief. Whose face carries it. Where the camera sits and why. What the performance is doing in the quiet parts. Which of the eleven usable takes is the one that means something. How long the audience is left in a shot before it turns.

On brand work there is a second job running alongside the first: keeping the commercial point intact through every one of those decisions. That is the difference between a film that looks expensive and a film that does the thing it was made for. Plenty of beautiful work fails this test.

What I Direct

Directing for the Room and the Screen

Most film directors have never called a live show, and most event directors do not cut their own films. Working across both changes what gets made. Content designed for a twenty metre LED wall behind a stage is not a sixteen by nine film scaled up. The eye moves differently, the timing is set by what is happening in the room, and the cut has to survive being watched from eighty metres away by someone standing up.

The reverse is true too. An aftermovie made by someone who was on headset during the show knows which moment actually landed, because they watched the room take it. That is not available from the footage alone.

How a Film Runs

Where I Shoot

Based in Dubai. Work runs across the UAE including Abu Dhabi and Sharjah, into Saudi Arabia including Riyadh, Jeddah and Qiddiya, and in Egypt out of Cairo. Bilingual Arabic and English delivery is standard, planned from the treatment rather than adapted in post.

Common Questions

What does a film director do on a brand film?

The director decides what the film is about and how it is told: the treatment, the casting, the shot design, the performance and the edit. On brand work the director also has to keep the commercial point intact through every one of those decisions.

What is the difference between a film director and a production company?

A production company supplies the crew, equipment, logistics and budget management. The director supplies the idea and the creative decisions. Many Dubai production companies will assign a director, and you can also bring your own.

What kinds of film do you direct?

Brand films and commercials, event films and aftermovies, content series, and narrative short work, plus directed AI-generated visual content.

Do you shoot outside Dubai?

Yes. Work runs across the UAE including Abu Dhabi and Sharjah, into Saudi Arabia including Riyadh and Jeddah, and in Egypt out of Cairo.

How long does a brand film take?

Four to eight weeks from brief to final cut is realistic: treatment and approvals, pre-production and casting, the shoot, then edit, grade, sound and revisions. Event films run faster because the shoot date is fixed by the event.

Can you direct in Arabic as well as English?

Yes. Scripts, voice casting, subtitles and on-screen type are planned for both languages from the treatment stage rather than adapted afterwards.

Do you work with AI-generated content?

Yes, as a directed medium, used where it genuinely serves the idea and held to the same standards as shot footage.
